It is sometimes surprising to realise that Ludwig van Beethoven was born 250 years ago. It seems like such a long time, and yet his music remains fresh, innovative and engaging to this day.

This year was to be the year when concert halls around the world resounded to the sound of Beethoven's works, from the intimate chamber works to the majesty of his great symphonic masterpieces.

Sadly, events far beyond the concert hall have robbed us of many much-anticipated performances. Fortunately, however, there exists a wonderful body of recordings which still allow us to appreciate and enjoy the great composer's genius.
