Arvo Part: Tabula Rasa
The music of Arvo Pärt (b. 1935) has attained prominence as an emblem of the shift from atonality to a new post-modern style, one based as much on music of the past as music of the present and future. ’Tabula Rasa’ stands as one of Pärt’s most widely-performed compositions, as well as a fine example of his mature style. The solo writing seems at times to recall the magnificent sound of Bach’s concerti, in which the two soloists’ parts are intertwined. One hears quite clearly Pärt’s distinctive and visionary voice in this passionate piece, declaring him a significant musical voice, one of the most distinctive composers to emerge from Eastern Europe in this century.
